10 Thoughts from Lions/Packers in Week 17

10) I think the only reason Tony Scheffler hasn't been on "So You Think You Can Dance" is because he already knows he can dance.

9) Alphonso Smith really has a knack for playing so poorly that any interception he gets during the course of a game quickly becomes irrelevant.

8) If the Packers did not release Pat Lee by the time this is published, I will be very surprised. Safeties, in themselves, are rare. Safeties like that are impossible.

7) After emphatically denying both team's field goal attempts before the half, Mother Nature was seen giving a Dikembe Mutombo finger wag to both Mason Crosby and Jason Hanson as they entered the locker room.

6) I can't help but feel like I'm being picky when it comes to Brandon Pettigrew. The guy caught over 80 balls this year, including seven for 116 yards today, yet whenever he drops a pass (which he always finds time to do), venom spews out of my mouth as I curse his name. If he had half the charisma that Scheffler has, I think he would be my favorite player.

5) Brian Billick's use of the phrase "throwing receivers open" nearly reached Jim Price/"art of pitching" proportions.

4) Calvin Johnson is a monster. The end.

3) When did Jordy Nelson become Terrell Owens circa 2001? Alphonso Smith is still looking for the contact that fell out on the stiff arm Nelson embarrassed him with on his first touchdown.

2) Matthew Stafford's 2011 stats:

5,038 yards (fifth most in single season in NFL history)
41 touchdowns (top ten in single season in NFL history)
63.5% completion
97.2 quarterback rating
16 games started (perhaps his most impressive stat)

He has shown what type of player he can be when he is healthy and validated his status as a #1 overall pick. Very excited to see what this kid does with the gigantic ceiling he has (23 years old...incredible). How he is considered the sixth best quarterback in the NFC is mind-boggling.

Stafford haters can be quiet now.

1) Matt Flynn.

Matt. Flynn.

480 yards and six touchdowns.

MATT FLYNN?!?!?!

My neck hurts from the amount of head-shaking I have done over this today.

For the record, I will not partake in any conversations that diminish what Aaron Rodgers has done this season because of the system he is in. I do not love him nearly as much as the commentators calling his games, but I will say that the defense the Lions trotted out today would have given up nine touchdowns and 1,200 yards to Rodgers.

Today was more about Detroit's defense than it was about John Elw...er...Flynn. When you apply little to no pressure for most of the game, let Ryan Grant go 80 yards on a screen pass and get burned by the corpse of Donald Driver for another score, you would probably make my five-year old niece look good (she has a laser for her age).

That being said, the man looked good today and had solid chemistry with Nelson, Jermichael Finley, and James Jones.

Flynn may have cemented himself as Kevin Kolb 2.0 as this performance could earn him a nice payday in the offseason. I'm interested to see if he can turn this into a career or if he will set someone back three years. I'm looking at you, Kansas City, Arizona, Jacksonville, etc. (Proceed with caution, guys. Small sample size).

The loss was a tough pill to swallow. Nine free points to start an NFL game, even if it is against a JV team, is a terrible thing to waste

Despite showing signs of being "the same ol' Lions," Detroit's offense kept them in the game and could provide enough spark to surprise someone in the playoffs.

...what was that? They're at New Orleans in the first round?

Oh...um...well, making the playoffs is something, right?
